Airport workers call off planned strike as FG meets demand

The association said in a statement that President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the harmonised rating allowances for its members.

 

The Nigeria Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) on Sunday, April 19, called off its planned industrial action scheduled to begin on Monday, April 20. 

This is contained in a statement signed by the association’s Deputy President and National Secretary, Haruna Bassi and Banji Olawode, respectively, in Lagos.

The statement noted that President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the harmonised rating allowances for NATCA.

"We enjoin all our members to continue to render their services in ensuring a safe and secure airspace in Nigeria.

"We shall partner with the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) on the future growth of the agency,’’ the statement said.

NATCA had on Thursday, April, halted activities at the Muritala Mohammed International  airport in Lagos for six hours, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.

The association had planned to collapse activities at the airport on Monday, April 20, to launch its major strike action.

However, Oluwode told NAN in telephone interview that the Presidency granted approval for their demand on April 17.

He said that the Presidency has ordered the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency(NAMA) to pay the harmonised rating allowances to the air traffic controllers.
